Abstract

1,195,625. Ethylene-propylene-diolefin quaterpolymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 25 March, 1968 [24 March, 1967], No. 14301/68. Headings C3P and C3Q. [Also in Division C5] Amorphous branched-chain copolymers comprise (a) ethylene, (b) an unconjugated diolefin containing 5 to 22 carbon atoms which polymerizes through both double bonds, (c) a diolefin having one double bond which is substantially less readily polymerizable than the other, and (d) propylene. The amounts of the components are (a) 25-75% by weight of the copolymer, (b) 0.01 to 0.5 gram moles per kilogram of copolymer and (c) 0.1 to 4.0 gram moles per kilogram. The copolymers are obtained by conventional polymerizations using co-ordination catalysts, particularly those containing vanadium compounds. The copolymers may be blended with natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. ethylene/propylene/hexadiene-1,4. In the examples the copolymers produced are ethylene/ propylene/1,4-hexadiene/1 ,7-octadiene, 1,4-pentadiene, 1,20-heneicosadiene, 5-(5-hexenyl)-norbornene, norborneo-norbornene (1 ,4,4a,5,8, 8ahexahydro - 1,4,5,8 - dimethano - naphthalene), bicyclo - (2.2.1) - hepta - 2,5 - diene (2,5 - norbornadiene), and dimers of bicycloheptadiene, and ethylene / propylene / 5-methylene-norbornene / 1 7-octadiene, using as catalysts diisobutyl aluminium chloride / vanadium trisacetylacetonate or VOCl 3 .
