1,207,525. Resistance furnace. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. 20 Nov., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 52575/67. Heading H5H. To prevent uneven heating of " crude products " in the production of burnt or graphitized carbon in an Acheson resistance furnace, the crude products 1 are surrounded in the furnace 4 by the usual granular charge 2 of carbonaceous material e.g. coke, and insulating panels 3 are interposed between the crude products 1 and extend in a direction transverse to the direction of current flow, arrowed, to eliminate or reduce the flow of current through the products themselves. The panels are between 0À4 and 2 times the area of the cross-section of the crude products in the direction transverse to current flow. The panels extend below the bottom end of the products. To ensure that the upper end of the products is heated as much as the remainder the panels terminate short of the upper end. The panels are composed of carbonizable material such as wood fibres agglomerated with " Bakelite " (Registered Trade Mark) or corrugated cardboard.
