A process for preparing the bis(2 - hydroxyethyl ester) of an alkali metal salt of 3, 5- dicarboxybenzene sulphonic acid comprising treating an alkali metal salt of 3,5-dicarboxybenzene sulphonic acid with ethylene glycol, preferably in a molar ratio of 1: 12 to 1: 3. The reaction may be conducted in the presence of an inert gas, at the boiling point of ethylene glycol. Preferably a catalyst comprising a compound of zinc, tin, titanium, antimony or germanium which is soluble in the reaction mixture is also present.
