Abstract
1,213,902. Refrigerators; heat transfer systems. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 8 Jan., 1968 [11 Jan., 1967], No. 1063/68. Headings F4H and F4U. Cold is transferred from the freezer 10 of a cold gas refrigerator to a load 70 by closed duct system 11 which contains helium gas at between 10 and 100 atmospheres pressure and through which the helium is circulated by a continuous displacement pump 15. Radiation screens 24 and 72 are provided and are cooled by the circulation of helium by a pump 26 through ducts 25 which are in heat exchange relationship with the regenerator 9 of the refrigerator. The pumps each comprise an impeller compartment and a motor compartment separated by a thermally insulating partition through which the pump shaft extends with a clearance so that helium is contained in the motor compartment. The whole of the apparatus other than the warm parts of the refrigerator and the pump motor compartments are located in an evacuated enclosure 23. That part of the enclosure surrounding the load, together with the load and gas pipe connections to the load may be disconnectible from the remainder of the apparatus, Fig. 1b (not shown). In other embodiments, Figs. 1, 4 and 5 (not shown), the radiation screens may be omitted, the radiation screens may be cooled by a second expansion space of the refrigerator, and the two pump impellers may be driven by a single motor.
