Abstract
1,222,598. Shaft seals. A. R. WILFLEY & SONS Inc. 18 Dec., 1968 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 60188/68. Heading F2B. In a centrifugal pump in which the impeller shaft 30 is sealed when at rest by valve means 108 and when running by expeller means creating an hydraulic seal and located between the impeller 60 and the valve means, the expeller means comprises a plurality of expellers 64, 120 and 124 rotatable with the shaft and axially spaced from one another. The valve member 108 is carried by a shaft sleeve 80 and urged by springs 110 to seat on a plate 164 when the shaft is at rest. When the pump is running, centrifugally actuated weights act on a back plate 104 to open the valve member, leakage then being prevented by a main expeller 64 and a pair of auxiliary expellers 120 and 124. The expeller 64 is keyed to the pump impeller hub 61 and has radial vanes 70. The expellers 120 and 124 are keyed to the shaft 30 and have radial vanes 130 and 132 respectively. The expellers are spaced by separator plates 160 and 162 which are clamped with the plate 164 between a ring 150 and a portion 44 of a cage 42 secured to a housing 36 having a vent opening 46. A rubber ring 142 axially locates the expellers 120 and 124 between the sleeve 80 and a sleeve 140. Pressurized cleaning fluid from an external source is supplied when required through passages in the portion 44 and a groove 186 and a passage 190 in the plate 164. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the vanes (130<SP>1</SP>, 132<SP>1</SP>) on the expellers (120<SP>1</SP>, 124<SP>1</SP>) face in axially opposite directions and a passage 208 is provided in the separator plate (162<SP>1</SP>) for supplying pressure fluid from an external source to the space between the expellers (120<SP>1</SP>, 124<SP>1</SP>). In a further modification. Fig. 8 (not shown), the valve member is a rubber &c. diaphragm (320) clamped to a housing member (304) and co-operating with a member (310) secured to the shaft (220) and radially spaced from the housing member (304). The diaphragm (320) is closed by the liquid pressure when the pump is at rest and opened by vacuum created when the pump is running.
