Abstract
1,242,788. Reaction in supersonic gas-stream. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE AND SOC CHIMIQUE DE CHARBONNAGES. 6 June, 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 28672/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Divisions C5 and H5] A stream of gas flowing at supersonic speed is pre-ionized by an auxiliary electrical discharge before being subjected to a main electrical discharge to produce chemical changes in the gas, e.g. the transformation of butane into acetylene. The apparatus includes a supersonic nozzle 4, an expansion chamber 5 and a gas recompression collector unit 6, with a main axial electrode 11 extending as far as the inlet of unit 6 and between which the main discharge occurs. The auxiliary electrode, which is positioned outside but close to the gas stream 19, is provided by an electrode 16 in the side wall of chamber 5, but alternatively is provided by the supersonic nozzle itself, Fig. 4, (not shown). In the latter embodiment, an insulated spring-pressed metal rod 47, Fig. 4 (not shown), provides for current connection to the nozzle 38. When the nozzle acts as auxiliary electrode it is of tungsten, steel or graphite, and is suitably insulated from the chamber walls.
