Abstract

1,270,679. Glass fibre manufacture. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. 9 June, 1969 [20 June, 1968], No. 29105/69. Heading C1M. In the production of glass and like fabrics, at least one stream of the molten glass is fed towards and intercepted by rotating blades, i.e. generally flat, thin blade-like or plate-like bodies, each blade carrying by centrifugal force a portion of the molten glass to the outer edge which leaves the edge in the form of a plurality of filaments which are then attenuated to fibres, the direction of feed of the or each stream being transverse to a plane in which the centrifugal force acts. As shown in Fig. 5, a rotor 1 on a vertical shaft 3 is provided with blades 2 and a stream 4 of molten glass, which may be accelerated by a blower 5, falls between the blades 2 which intercept the glass. The end of each blade 2 has points 6, Fig. 4, or channels which subdivide the molten glass to filaments 7. The filaments 7 are then either subjected to a high speed jet of fluid (Fig. 1, not shown) or "soft" flames from a burner 12 which assist in breaking up the filaments 7 to fibres. The fibres are then removed by an annular blower 13. The ends of the blades 2 may be heated by an induction coil 14. As shown in Fig. 6, the blades 27 are on a rotor with a horizontal axis and the stream 4 is subdivided by falling on to a rotating groove disc 24 which projects streams 4a between th blades 27. The rotor has surrounding hot ga jet chamber 25, blower 28 and heater 29 fo attenuating the filaments 26. The blades, besides the points 6, may be arranged to obtain a reserve of glass thereon. As shown in Fig. 7, blade 15 is of concave profile relative to its direction of rotation to give a reserve of glass in cavity 16. Other arrangements include a shield secured to the blade with a through passage. The blades may be arranged along the generatrices of the rotor or may be set at an angle thereto.
