Abstract

1303345 Vices P C PEDDINGHAUS and W PEDDINGHAUS [trading as PAUL FERD PEDDINGHAUS] 11 June 1970 [11 June 1969] 28389/70 Heading B3B A vice comprises fixed and movable parts carrying jaws 8 and 7 respectively, the movable part having a guide-rail portion 5 which passes through an opening 4 in the fixed part, the guide rail having inclined surfaces 16, 17 at two adjacent corners which co-operate respectively with an inclined surface 18 and a guiding member 20 having inclined surface 19 inside the opening 4. The member 20 is located in a bore 21 which opens into, and is transverse to, the opening 4 and is retained in the bore 21 by a threaded plug 26. In order to control the slackness between the movable part and fixed part of the vice the member 20 is biased by a spring 24 coaxial with the member and which is located in a polygonal bore 22 and which is contoured by a cup shaped member 23 slidable in the polygonal bore, the closed end of the cup member engaging in a co-operating polygonal recess 28 in the screwed plug 26. To effect adjustment of the member 20 a spanner key is inserted in the corresponding bore 29 in the plug 26 which displaces the cup member 23 axially to permit rotation of the plug. The removal of the key allows the cup member to return by the spring bias into the recess 28 in the plug and hence prevent accidental rotation thereof. In an alternative embodiment the recess 28 in the plug is omitted and the engaging surfaces between the plug and cup member are provided with friction material.
