1331670 Quaternized benzofuranyl-benzimidazoles CIBA-GEIGY AG 9 Dec 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 57287/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division D1] The invention comprises compounds of the general formula where R 1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or together with R 2 forms a fuzed benzene radical; R 2 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, carboxyl, carboalkoxy, aminocarbonyl, mono- or di-alkylaminocarbonyl, sulphonic acid, alkylsulphonyl, alkoxysulphonyl, aminosulphonyl, alkylaminosulphonyl, or together with R 1 or R 3 forms a fused benzene radical; R 3 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, or together with R 2 or R 4 forms a fused benzene radical; R 4 is hydrogen halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or together with R 3 forms a fused benzene radical; R 5 is hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl optionally subsitututed by methyl and/or methoxy R 6 is hydrogen; halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl, alkylsulphonyl or phenylsulphonyl, R 7 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; R 8 is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl having at least two carbon atoms, cyanoethyl, phenyl (optionally substituted by halogen, alkyl or alkoxy), cycloalkyl or aralkyl; R 9 is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aralkyl, CH 2 CN, CH 2 CONH 2 or -CH 2 COOR (R being an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms) and X is halogen, alkylsulphonic acid, or phenylsulphonic acid (optionally substituted by alkyl). They may be prepared by reacting a non- quaternized compound of the formula with a compound of the formula The compounds of the invention may be used as optical brightening agents.
