Abstract
1366163 Discharge lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 15 Sept 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 43097/71 Heading H1D A double-walled fluorescent lamp has a metal and rare gas filling which emits far U.V. radiation, mainly at specific resonance lines within the range 1650 to 2300 Šngstrom units, for currents of greater than 1 amp cm.<SP>-2</SP>, and a phosphor coating of calcium tungstate, magnesium silicate, or calcium-magnesium silicate, on the inner surface of the outer envelope, which emits visible or near U.V. radiation in response to the far U.V. radiation. As described, the filling may include mercury, cadmium, or zinc, at a pressure in operation of 10<SP>-3</SP> to 1 torr, and 1 to 20 torr of A, Ne, He, Xe or Kr. The space between the two envelope walls is filled with helium, argon, or nitrogen at 50 to 500 torr, for a mercury discharge filling, or is evacuated for a cadmium or zinc discharge filling. The preferred current density is 4 to 25 amps cm.<SP>-2</SP>, but values up to 100 amps cm.<SP>-2</SP> are referred to. At the higher current densities, a hollow cathode may be employed formed by a pair of semi-cylindrical, concave, conical, or inclined, surfaces, with a thermionic filament therebetween for starting.
