Abstract

1369793 Capping bottles METAL CLOSURES Ltd 24 Aug 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 40426/71 Heading B8T. A detachable rotary headset for an application head 1 of a bottle closing machine comprises a head block 53, with cylinders 55 arranged round its axis, each cylinder containing a pressure fluid operated piston 56 with torsion springs 60 to return it to its original position. The pistons 56 activate arms 57 carrying spindles 58 connected to thread roller arms 61 and skirt roller arms 62, carrying thread 63 and skirt rollers 64 respectively, the former being each mounted in a bearing sleeve 65 and the latter in an adjustable sleeve 71. The thread roller 63 is movable in relation to the arm 61 and is biased upward by means of compression spring 66, and the skirt roller is similarly biased with a spring 72. A lower pressure block 73, connected by a screw thread and needle bearing assembly 74, 75 to a hollow pressure stem 17 is adapted to reform the head of the closure with adjustable head pressure being applied to member 79 from the upper pressure block 13, activated by fluid pressure in cylinder 8 acting on piston 9. A cam and roller mechanism 7a, 107 cause cylinder 8 to move down enabling constant fluid pressure in the cylinder to operate piston 9 thereby bringing pressure to bear on block 73 through intermediate numbers 13, 17. The application of fluid pressure to cylinder 8 is independent of the application of pressure leading to movement of the roller arms 61, 62, and head reforming occurs prior to radial pressure being applied to the closure skirt. Rotation of head block 53 causes rotation of rollers 63, 69 around bottle 3, the headset rotation being activated by a keyed connection to a drive spindle 31 driven by a gear 32. In a modification (not shown) the headset may be arranged so that the skirt and/or thread rollers can pivot on inclined or horizontal pins. A further modification (not shown) provides separate control of the fluid pressure to the skirt and thread rollers respectively by providing separate pressure passages to the respective cylinders in the headset.
