Abstract

1399881 Boring earth &c DEMAROK INTERNATIONAL LTD 20 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 8846/72 Heading E1F An adaptor assembly comprises a first adaptor 1 for connection to an inner drill string (5), Fig 3, (not shown), and a second adaptor 2 for connection to an outer drill string 14, the second adaptor 2 having a bore therein adapted to receive the first adaptor 1 in a non- rotatable but axially-slidable manner. The adaptor 1 is a close sliding fit in the bore, the adaptor 1 and bore being of the same non- circular cross-section. The casing adaptor 2 is provided with apertures 6 through which a flushing medium, e.g. water, may be supplied (Fig 4, not shown) via a flushing head 7 rotatably mounted on the casing adaptor, or through which a flushing medium, e.g. air; can return to the surface having been supplied down the inner drill string.(5). A seal (17), Fig 2 (not shown), may be provided to selectively close the apertures 6 and cause flushing medium supplied down the inner drill string. to return to the surface between the outer casing 14 and borehole. Percussion is applied to drill bits (13) and (15) on the ends of the strings (5) and 14, respectively, via the adaptor 1 and inner string (5), the drill bits being provided with abutment shoulders (16) percussion may be applied directly to the outer string 14 by means of cooperating abutment shoulders on the adaptors 1 and 2. In order to raise the outer casing string 14 by raising the adaptor 1, four apertures 24 are provided in the casing adaptor 2 for receiving a two-pronged fork which coacts with a shoulder 1b of the adaptor 1 to prevent its withdrawal from the adaptor 2.
