Abstract

1414267 Artificial hip-joints SARATOVSKY GOSUDARSTVENNY MEDITSINSKY INSTITUT 13 April 1973 [4 May 1972] 17785/ 73 Heading A5R An artificial hip-joint comprises an endoprosthesis of the acetabulum 1, a generally convex surface of which is fixed in the pelvis with the concave surface thereof defining a seat 5, an endoprosthesis 2 of the proximal portion of the femur, having a generally spherical head 6, connected rigidly by a neck 7 to a tapered shaft 9, fixed in the femoral medullary canal, an insertion piece 12 installed between the surface of the seat 5 and the surface of the head 6, providing a pivotal joint, the insertion piece 12 having an inner surface or socket cooperating with the surface of the head 6, a lockable ring 13 fixing the insertion piece against the seat and having a part-spherical surface co-operating with the head, the depth of the cavity defined by the inner part-spherical surface of the insertion piece 12 being less than the radius of the head 6 so that the lockable ring 13 holds both the insertion piece 12 and the head 6 in position. The ring 13 is tightened in position by lug 15 and locked by means of a screw 14. The shaft 9 has apertures 10 for bony tissue to grow through, and a pin 11 to secure the trockanter major. The endoprosthesis 1 has a plurality of annular projections 3 located exteriorly in tiers and having tapered edges with apertures 4 for bony tissue of the pelvis to grow through.
