Abstract

1421672 Reinforced carbon composites UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 6 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 40296/73 Heading C1A A carbon fibre reinforced carbon composite is prepared by spraying a mixture of a carbonizable resin binder, short carbon fibres and particulate carbon to form a deposit and thereafter heating the deposit in an inert atmosphere to a temperature at which the binder carbonizes. Compressive pressure may be applied during heating. The carbonized structure may be impregnated with further resin and carbonized or pyrolitic carbon may be deposited after the first carbonization step. Suitable starting materials include particulate carbon made from ground electrode carbon, domestic coke, and carbon black, fibres, preferably 0À15-3À00 mm. in length and 1-10 Á in diameter, produced from cellulosic or polyacrylonitrile yarns and thermoplastic resins such as coal tar or petroleum pitch, thermosetting resins such as phenolic, epoxy or furfuryl alcohol resin or combinations of these. The preferred ratio of fibres to particulate carbon is in the range 1: 200 to 1: 2 by weight and the ratio of binder to fibres plus particulate carbon is in the range 1: 20 to 1: 4 by weight.
