Abstract

1429243 Overbased materials; lubricants OROBIS Ltd 10 May 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 8629/73 Headings C4X and C5F An overbased material is made by heating together an alkyl-phenol, sulphur and between 0À2 and 1À3 moles of alkali-metal hydroxide per mole of alkyl-phenol, and heating the mixture with at least two moles of an alkaline earth per mole of alkylphenol followed by carbonation at elevated temperature and filtration of the product. The alkaline earth is an oxide or hydroxide of Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba. The alkyl group in the phenol may have from 8 to 30 carbon atoms. In Example 1, alkylphenol, sulphur, NaOH and neutral Ca sulphonate are heated together with the addition of ethylene glycol; H 2 S is then removed under reduced pressure, and Ca(OH) 2 , tridecanol, ethylene glycol and lubricating oil then added and the mixture heated and water of reaction taken off: In Example 2, alkylphenol, sulphur and LiOH are heated together in the first stage; this product is mixed with Ca(OH) 2 , tridecanol, ethylene and mineral oil for the second heating. In Example 3, the sulphurized alkylphenol from the first stage of Example 2 is mixed with alkylphenol and LiOH.2H 2 O and heated; Ca(OH) 2 is then added, followed by ethylene glycol, mineral oil and tridecanol for the second stage. In Example 4 alkylphenol, sulphur, NoOH, Ca(OH) 2 , mineral oil and tridecanol are all heated together from the beginning, ethylene glycol is then added and the mixture heated to remove water of reaction.
