Abstract

1430229 Thermal switches J C TAYLOR and OTTER CONTROLS Ltd 9 March 1973 [10 Dec 1971] 57580/71 Heading H1N [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A thermal switch has a dished bimetallic snap-acting switch actuating member 22 at one end of a moulded plastics body 1 with an external screw-thread 2. In snapping from one dished form to the other, bimetallic member 22 moves contact 10 away from fixed contact 8 via push-rod 27. Hollow metal sheet connector pins 5, 6 are reinforced by plastics pins 15, 16 depending from cover-plate 17. Mains terminal 5 is connected to contact 8 via tab 9; contact 10 connects in a base socket via tab 12 with one heating element cold lead 39. Mains terminal 6 connects via strip 13 and tab 14 to the other heating element cold lead 39. Brass mounting plate 26 for the bimetallic element 22 and cover-plate 17 are attached to the casing by plastics pins extending through apertures and burred over. In use, bimetallic member 22 contacts a protrusion 46 on a flat brass header plate 30 of the immersion heating element, to which it is attached via studs 41, 42, 43. The copper sheathed heating element 29 is brazed at dished holes in header plate 30 with cold leads 39 protruding through (Fig. 5, not shown). The protuberance 46 is filled with silver solder (47). Dished rim 32 of the header plate engages a flange 35 of sealing ring 36, an axial extension 37 passing in use through a vessel wall and surrounding a plain extension of the switch casing (Fig. 6, not shown). The heater is secured in position in use by a ring 45 screwed on to the switch casing and engaging the vessel wall.
