Abstract

1452841 Incontinence napkins COLGATEPALMOLIVE CO 11 Oct 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 44107/74 Heading A5R A diaper 20 having substantially inextensible side edges comprises a fluid-pervious cover sheet 22 having at least one pleat 32 extending laterally across it; a fluid-impervious back sheet 24 having at least one pleat 34 extending laterally across it; and at least two absorbent pads 26a and 26b between the cover sheet and the back sheet arranged with adjacent ends overlapping or substantially abutting, the pads being movable longitudinally relative to one another; whereby on longitudinal tension being applied to the ends of the diaper remote from the sides, the diaper transforms from a generally flat condition to a concave configuration with its sides bowing inwardly in the central region. The margins of the back sheet are folded over the cover sheet and are provided with conventional tape strips for fixing to the body. The central regions of the longitudinal edges of the diaper are folded again over the cover sheet and fixed by adhesive, this being allowed by the shape of the pads which taper towards the longitudinal centre of the diaper. On pulling of ends 44a and 44b of the diaper the pleats 32 and 34 straighten in the middle of the diaper but are held at the edge regions by the folded over portions at 52a and 52b. This produces a concave configuration of the diaper suitable for fitting to the crotch region of the body. The pads need not be separated by tucks of the cover sheet, the overlapping ends may be merely placed one on the other. In another embodiment the pads abut each other in the centre of the diaper and are pulled apart when the ends 44a and 44b are pulled, liquid then being discharged to the back-sheet from where it spreads and is absorbed in the pads. In a third embodiment there are two pleats in the cover sheet and back sheet, and three pads overlapped in turn.
