Abstract

1454754 Permanent magnets GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 24 Oct 1973 [26 Oct 1972] 49554/73 Heading H1P A cylindrical hollow permanent magnet 10 (Fig. 1) is surrounded at its north and south poles respectively by abutting radially magnetised sleeves 11, 12 oriented to provide exterior and interior surfaces of opposed polarities; the latter polarity being similar to that of the magnet 10 with which it is in contact so as to repel leakage flux from the latter, and thus confine the flux distribution to the sleeve magnet, e.g. in focussing an electron tube. The sleeve may be flexible. In a modification (Fig. 2) a pair of permanent rectangular magnets 13, 14 are connected by a yoke 15 and separated by an airgap. Plural rectangular normally magnetised plates 16, 17, 18 and 21, 22, 23 (Fig. 2), (Fig. 3, not shown) are applied to the surfaces of magnets 13, 14 adjacent the airgap and their contacting surfaces have similar polarities to the respective magnet surfaces to repel leakage flux therefrom. The plates may be of cobalt-rare earth or ferrite magnetic materials.
