1455737 Acetals F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 26 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 04559/76 Divided out of 1455736 Heading C2C Compounds of the general formula (R<SP>1,2</SP> = alkyl, alkenyl; R<SP>5</SP> = alkyl; A<SP>2</SP> = CF 3 , CN, alkoxycarbonyl, CR<SP>8</SP>R<SP>9</SP>R<SP>13</SP>; R<SP>8,9</SP> = H, alkyl; R<SP>13</SP> = OH, alkoxy, NR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>; R<SP>3,4</SP> = H, alkyl, alkanoyl) are prepared by standard methods, e.g. reacting the corresponding substituted benzaldehyde with acrylonitrile or a #-alkoxypropionitrile and R<SP>5</SP>OH in an alkaline medium, The preparation of 2,6-dimethoxy-4-diethoxymethylbenzyl alcohol, α - hydroxy - 3,5 - dimethoxy - p - tolualdehyde and α,3,5 - trimethoxy - ptolualdehyde is described.
