Abstract

1456018 Sound wave attenuation by interference NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 15 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54370/72 Headings FIB, FIG and F1J Apparatus for attenuating sound waves propagating in a duct, e.g. of a jet engine, Fig. 10, comprises an array of sound sources 11, 11a, 11b or 13, 13a, 13b longitudinally spaced relative to the axis of propagation of the sound waves to be attenuated the sources being adjacent the duct walls and the arrangement being such that the resultant of the generated sound waves propagating along the duct in one direction interferes destructively with the sound wave to be attenuated and the resultant of the generated sound waves propagating in the opposite direction is negligible. Detectors 12, 12a, 12b (each consisting of three or four microphones distributed around the duct) detect the sound to be attenuated and by means of an amplifying and delay unit cause signals to energize the sources 11, 11a, 11b (each consisting of three or four loudspeakers). The arrangement of speakers is such as to propagate sound of a particular frequency only towards the inlet orifice of the engine shown, this sound interfering destructively with the sound from the engine. The arrangement of the microphones is the same as that of the loudspeakers so that the microphones are not subject to positive feedback and respond only to the sound wave to be attenuated. At the rear of the engine are detectors 14, 14a, 14b and sources 13, 13a, 13b, comprising microphones and loudspeakers respectively, which behave similarly. In Fig. 11, a rectangular cross-section silencer 22 has sound detectors 23, 23', 23" coupled via amplifying and delay circuitry 25 to loudspeaker sources 24, 24', 24" to produce sound waves to interfere destructively with sound propagated along the silencer 22 from a jet engine 21.
