Abstract

1462134 Aliphatic ethoxylates PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 21 March 1975 [21 March 1974 10 March 1975] 11921/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] An ethoxylate produced by base-catalysed ethoxylation of primary alcohol has the general formula wherein R 1 is a linear alkyl radical and R 2 has the formula wherein R 3 is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, R 3 being alkyl in not more than 70% by wt. of the primary alcohol, wherein R 1 and R 2 together form a C 9 to C 15 alkyl radical (mean values) at least 65% by wt. of the alkyl radical having a chain length within Œ1 C of the mean, and wherein n av is between 3À5 and 6À5, provided that the total wt. of unreacted alcohol does not exceed 5% and the ethoxylated component in which n = 2 to 7 inclusive is not less than 63%, the hydrophiliclipophilic balance (HLB) of the ethoxylate being in the range 9À5 to 11À5, the ethoxylate being otherwise free of alkoxylated nonionic surfactants. The ethoxylates may be prepared by condensing the corresponding fatty alcohol with ethylene oxide in the presence of NaOH or KOH.
