Abstract

1470537 Refrigeration GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 4 June 1974 [21 June 1973] 24659/74 Heading F4H An automatic ice maker 12 is provided in the freezer compartment 2 of a refrigerator, the cooling compartment 3 of which contains a water reservoir 11 for the ice maker. The electric control circuit for the ice maker includes a float switch 39 in the reservoir 11 and is arranged so that if the water level in the reservoir falls below a predetermined level during an ice-harvesting and water-filling cycle, the cycle will be completed but the next cycle will not be initiated. As shown, when the ice is formed in the ice maker, a thermostat 45 actuates a switch 56 to open the circuit for a fan 30 and, provided the float switch 39 and a switch 48 detecting whether an ice store is full are closed, to energize the ice maker motor 20. At the same time, a solenoid valve 41 is opened to by-pass the refrigeration circuit expansion device thereby supplying hot refrigerant to the ice maker and freezing compartment evaporators 15, 23. When the ice is released from the mould, the motor 20 runs, driving a timer switch 50, the energization being maintained by a holding circuit through contacts 53, 54 of the timer switch. After ejection of the ice pieces, a second circuit is established through timer switch contact 55 to energize a water pump 36 for a predetermined period to fill the mould with a fresh charge of water from the reservoir. During completion of the harvesting cycle, the solenoid valve 41 is closed by opening of contacts 53, 54 and the thermostatic switch 56 returns to its normal position in which the fan 30 is energized. The fan 30 draws air from the cooling compartment 3 through a passage 33 into the freezer compartment 2 and returns it through a passage 32 into the cooling compartment.
