Abstract

1487491 Polyesterimides STANDARD OIL CO 9 Jan 1975 [11 Jan 1974 1 Aug 1974] 952/75 Heading C3R Condensation polymers in which at least one N-hydroxyalkyl trimellitic acid imide provides at least 75 mol per cent of the total monomers have an Inherent Viscosity of at least 0À3 dl./g. (0À5% w./v. in 60/40 w./w. phenol/C 2 H 2 Cl 4 at 25‹ C.). They may be obtained by melt polycondensation in the presence of a tin, titanium or antimony esterification catalyst. Specified optional comonomers are aminoacids, e.g. amino-acetic, -hexanoic or -benzoic acid; lactams, e.g. caprolactam; lactones, e.g. betapropier- or capro-lactone; hydroxyacids, e.g. salicylic or glycollic; and di-COOH/glycol halfesters, e.g. of ethylene glycol and maleic anhydride. Specific examples illustrate the preparation of homopolymers from trimellitic anhydride and ethanolamine in one or two stages. The polymers may be used for films, coatings or mouldings. Tale may be incorporated during the second (polycondensation) stage of the reaction as an anti-stick agent.
