Abstract

1508411 Production of base soluble resins and their use SYNRES INTERNATIONAL BV 5 July 1976 27850/76 Headings C3P and C3V A solid aqueous base-soluble solid resin is the polymerization product of a mixture comprising (A) 20-70 mole per cent of at least one carboxyl group-free ethylenic monomer; (B) 15-60 mole per cent of at least one carboxyl group containing ethylenic monomer; (C) 3-20 mole per cent of a mixture of alcohols having normal boiling points above 175‹ C. which mixture contains 10-90 wt. per cent of one or more water insoluble liquid alcohols and from 90-10 wt. per cent of one or more water soluble alcohols, and (D) 0À3 to 1À0 mole per cent of a free radical initiator, the solid resin having a number average molecular wt. of 600 to 4000 and an acid number of 60-250. Many examples are given in which the following mixtures of alcohols are used as (C): decanol/ 2,2,4 - trimethyl - 1,3 - pentane diol, decanol/ diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, and decanol/diethylene glycol/2,2,4 - trimethyl - 1,3- pentane diol. As monomers there are used mixtures containing methacrylic acid as monomer (B) and styrene and/or various (meth)- acrylate esters as (A). Examples 13 to 16 and 19 and 20 illustrate the use of the exemplified polymers in aqueous floor polish compositions.
