Abstract

1526723 Co-extruding laminates O-B RASMUSSEN 27 Aug 1975 [5 July 1974] 16899/78 Divided out of 1526722 Heading B5A A method of making a laminate of at least two layers, comprises rotating relative to one another in a circular extrusion die having an exit slot 16 at least two concentric tubular layers, each comprising a stream 1, 2 on an array of streams of molten polymer material and simultaneously melt stretching each of the layers substantially in one direction, bonding the layers in the die immediately prior to their passage through the exit slot to form a laminate with the said directions stretching and solidifying the laminate while maintaining the crossing melt stretched structure, the bonding in the laminate being sufficiently weak to permit local delamination upon tearing. In Fig. 1, the streams 1, 2 are fed to annular channels 4, 5 in the two walls in the annular track 6 in which the rings 7, 8 are moved in opposite directions, the rings having rows of partitions 9, 10 forming two rows 11, 12 of openings through which the streams are extruded into the collecting chamber 15 terminating in exit slot 16, the streams being attenuated by the extrusion and united in the collecting chamber. In the alternative apparatus of Fig. 2, polymers A and B are distributed from fixed inlet 17 into concentric circular streams, A passing through annular conduits 22, 23 and B through 24, the streams through three circular arrays of channels into annular chambers 28, 29, 30 respectively. The parts 19 and 20 are rotated in different directions and form a co-extrusion for two layers, the molten streams being attenuated by passage through the annular conduits 35, 36 and united in chamber 38.
