Abstract
Gels containing silica and one or more metal oxides which resemble the silica gel described in Specification 136,543 are obtained by reacting upon a soluble silicate, with one or more p metal salts such as ferric, aluminium, or copper chloride, with or without a proportion of free acid such as hydrochloric acid. The free acid is employed when metal salts which do not readily hydrolize are used. The procedure is similar to that described in the above mentioned Specification, the reagents being employed in such proportions that the reacting mixture is slightly acid and sets wholly to a jelly. The products are suitable for absorbing gases or for catalysts. The product obtained from ferric chloride and sodium silicate is stated to be suitable for the catalytic production of sulphur trioxide. The metal oxide may be reduced to metal. The products mentioned contain silica with iron, copper, aluminium, thorium, magnesium, manganese, or nickel oxide; silica and iron oxide with copper, magnesium, cadmium, zinc, or manganese oxide; and silica and alumina with copper oxide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that aluminates, stannates, titanates, tungstates, and zirconates may be used in place of silicates. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Gels containing silica and one or more metal oxides which resemble the silica gel described in Specification 136,543, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], are obtained by reacting upon a soluble silicate, with one or more metal salts such as ferric, aluminium, or copper chloride, with or without a proportion of free acid such as hydrochloric acid. The free acid is employed when metal salts which do not readily hydrolize are used. The procedure is similar to that described in the above-mentioned Specification, the reagents being employed in such proportions that the whole liquor gelatinizes. The products mentioned contain silica with iron, aluminium, thorium, magnesium, manganese, copper, or nickel oxide; silica and iron oxide with copper, magnesium, cadmium, zinc, or manganese oxide; and silica and alumina with copper oxide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that aluminates, stannates, titanates, tungstates and zirconates may be used in place of silicates. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
