Manual adjustment of zero; modifying scale of readings.-In an instrument having a flat spiral control spring for the movable or terminal element the outer end of the spring is threaded through apertures in an angularly adjustable member for the purpose of adjusting the initial torque of the spring and the zero position of the pointer. In the instrument shown, the movable element 15 which is pivoted in a screw 17 in a stationary member 18 carries a pointer 16 and has attached to it one end of a phospher-bronze or steel spring 21 the other end of which is threaded through apertures in the bent portion 23 of a pivoted member 22 and through which it can be pulled for adjustment. The member 22 is pivoted on a bush 30 concentrically with the element 15 and has a slot 29 in which works a crank-pin 24 on a disc 25 rotatable by means of a screw-headed rod 26 to effect a fine adjustment of the member 22. The rod 26 frictionally engages the cover plate 13 by means of a washer 27 and spring 28.
