Abstract

Bourdon pressure gauges; applications of; mounting-details for; damping arrangements.- An apparatus for determining the average pressures at various points (e.g. in the several cylinders) of engines working with varying pressures consists of a liquid-filled pressure gauge in throttled communication with a liquid-filled chamber separated by a flexible diaphragm from another chamber which can be put into commurication with any one of these points by a selecting device. A Bourdon-tube gauge 6 is filled with glycerine and separated by a diaphragm 10 from a chamber 29 which is connected by a pipe 15 with the selecting device. As variations of pressure are damped by the glycerine being forced through the throttling passage 8, steady readings are obtained. The selecting device operates control valves and comprises a shaft 23 rotatable in a casing 17 provided with ports 18 leading to the various points of the engine (e.g. opposite ends of the same cylinder) each having a valve 19 normally closed by the working pressure helped by a spring 20. Cam-shaped grooves 22 on the shaft engage these valves to lift them and are arranged so that only one valve is lifted at a time as the shaft is rotated by hand. Thus any point may be put into communication with the gauge at will, and in high speed engines the average pressure will be indicated. The adaptation of the invention to elastic diaphragm and to liquid-level pressure gauges is also described.
