Abstract

A flow passage L within an exhaust gas manifold C which, in use, is at substantially constant pressure serves to guide exhaust gases from the cylinders of an engine to a turbine. The passage L communicates with the buffer space formed between the passage wall and the outer wall of the manifold. At each exhaust gas impulse, a fraction of the exhaust gases is permitted to pass into the buffer space. The exhaust gas impulses are thus prevented from giving rise to increases in pressure within the passage L whilst the kinetic energy of the impulses remains approximately the same. The buffer space may communicate with the passage L through openings (O), Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown), in a passage defining a wall or walls. <IMAGE>
