Abstract
Crude magnesia, such as calcined magnesite, brucite or dolomite, or hydrated magnesia, or a soluble magnesium salt such as the sulphate or a mineral containing it, is treated with water and an ammonium salt such as the sulphate or chloride. To the solution ammonia is added to precipitate a part of the magnesia, the precipitate being of the light or heavy variety according as the conditions of temperature, concentration, and pressure are selected. The precipitate is separated and the mother-liquor is used to treat more crude material.
