Abstract
A tubular sleeve 10 has a central, internal abutment 11 whereby to define two oppositely directed sockets for receiving the ends of scaffold tubes 16. Each socket has a screw actuated clamp 12, 13. The abutment 11 is formed by a pin. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Sleeve coupling for a pair of scaffolding members
This invention relates to a sleeve coupling for connecting together a pair of elongate scaffolding members (such as for example a pair of scaffolding tubes) in an axially aligned relationship, the object of the invention being to provide such a sleeve coupling in a simple yet effective form.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a sleeve coupling for connecting together a pair of elongate scaffolding members in an axially aligned relationship, said coupling comprising a tubular socket which is provided at or adjacent to the mid-point of its length with an abutment which extends across the interior of said socket, the tubular socket also being provided with a pair of clamping screws which are respectively disposed on opposite sides of said abutment and which each extend through an aperture formed in the wall of the socket from the exterior thereof, each clamping screw being in screw-threaded engagement with said aperture or with a member connected thereto whereby the adjacent ends of the pair of elongate scaffolding members can be inserted respectively into the opposite ends of the tubular socket until they engage said abutment whereafter said clamping screws can be rotated to clamp said adjacent ends of the two scaffolding members in the two ends of the tubular socket.
The aforesaid abutment may comprise a pin which extends across the interior of said socket between oppositely disposed parts of the wall thereof and conveniently there is provided in association with each clamping screw, a nut which is welded on to the exterior of the socket.
The invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one example of a sleeve coupling constructed in accordance with the invention, said coupling being shown as assembled to one of a pair of elongate scaffolding members it is required to couple together, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a scaffold frame (shown incomplete) which can utilise sleeve couplings made in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing the sleeve coupling shown therein comprises a tubular socket 10 which is formed from a short length of cylindrical tubing. At or adjacent to the mid-point of the length of said piece of tubing 10 there is provided an abutment in the form of a pin 11 which is located at its ends in a pair of diametrically opposed holes drilled in the wall of the tubing 10 so that said pin 11 extends across the interior of the tubing and thereby divides it in effect into a pair of axially aligned sockets. If desired the ends of said pin 11 are riveted or peened over to retain the pin in position.
There is also provided a pair of clamping screws 12 and 1 3 which are axially aligned with each other but are respectively disposed on opposite sides of the pin 11. The inner end of each clamping screw 12 or 13 extends through an aperture formed in the wall of the tubing 10 and in one arrangement each aperture can be screwthreaded so that the associated clamping screw can be screwed into or out of the tubing as required. Conveniently however there is provided, in association with each clamping screw, a nut 14 or 1 5 which is welded on to the exterior of the tubing 10 in alignment with the aperture formed in its wall.
In use a sleeve coupling as above described is used to connect together a pair of elongate scaffolding members (such as a pair of scaffolding tubes) in an axially aligned relationship and in
Figure 1 the tubing 10 has been mounted on the upper end of one such scaffolding member 16, the arrangement being such that said member 1 6 is inserted into the lower end of the tubing 10 as shown until the upper end of the member 1 6 engages the pin 1 The clamping screw 13 is then tightened to hold the member 16 in position.
Another elongate scaffolding member (not shown) can then be inserted into the upper end of the tubing 10, the lower end of said other scaffolding member then engaging the upper side of the pin 11 before the clamping screw 12 is tightened so that both scaffolding members will then be secured in an axially aligned relationship.
Figure 1 illustrates an incomplete scaffolding frame that can be built up from scaffolding members and sleeve couplings constructed in accordance with the invention. Thus the frame comprises a plurality of upright members 17 together with a plurality of horizontal members 1 8 and each of the upright members 1 7 can be constructed from a plurality of elongate scaffolding members which are joined together in an axially aligned relationship by one or more of the sleeve couplings 10.
1. A sleeve coupling for connecting together a pair of elongate scaffolding members in an axially aligned relationship, said coupling comprising a tubular socket which is provided at or adjacent to the mid-point of its length with an abutment which extends across the interior of said socket, the tubular socket also being provided with a pair of clamping screws which are respectively disposed on opposite sides of said abutment and which each extend through an aperture formed in the wall of the socket from the exterior thereof, each clamping screw being in screw-threaded engagement with said aperture or with a member connected thereto whereby the adjacent ends of the pair of elongate scaffolding members can be inserted respectively into the opposite ends of the tubular socket until they engage said abutment whereafter said clamping screws can be rotated to clamp said adjacent ends of the two scaffolding members in the two ends of the tubular socket.
2. A sleeve coupling as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the socket abutment comprises a pin which extends across the interior of the socket
