Abstract
A method of identifying an article in a non-repeatable manner to prevent copying or forgery comprises producing a holographic image on a sheet or film, and embodying the sheet or film with the image into the article or its packaging. A worthy article is a banknote, licence, passport or the like. The image may be incorporated into the article itself and may be, for example, a holographic image of the article holder or of the monarch; and worthy article to be projected is a commercial article, such as a pre-recorded cassette, the holographic image may be embodied in the packaging thereof.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Identification method
This invention relates to a method of identifying articles in a non-repeatable manner two prevent copying or forgery.
The prevention of forgery of such items as banknotes, credit cards, passports, identity cards, tickets, casino chips, playing cards, securities, letters of credit, and the like has always been a problem which has not yet been fully solved. Taking bank-notes as an example, in the past it has been the practice to employ very complex designs on the bank-note which are technically very difficult to produce, and therefore to copy. However, given enough skill and time such designs can be copied by conventional printing methods. There is also the problem of "pirate" video and audio tape-recordings and gramophone records being copied or made without permission of the copyright holder and sold commercially to the detriment of recording companies and artistes.
The invention seeks to provide a method of identifying original articles which is relatively inexpensive and virtually impossible to reproduce.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of identifying an article which comprises producing a holographic image on a sheet or film, and embodying the sheet or film which the image into the article or its packaging.
The production of holographic images on sheets or films, for example a plastics material, is possible but requires very sophisticated and expensive equipment and technical expertise well beyond the range of a normal forger or "pirate". Furthermore, a holographic image cannot be copied easily and even then it has to be done holographically. Thus, if the original is destroyed or kept secure, it becomes virtually impossible to duplicate a holographic image so produced without considerable expense and expertise of a high order. The holographic image may be, for example, a photograph, for instance a photograph of the passport or credit card holder, or, in the case of a bank-note, a photograph of the monarch.
It is possible to produce images of closely spaced lines on film or plastics material which act as a diffraction grating and therefore give very striking "rainbow" effects to the material when it is struck by light. Furthermore the diffraction gratings may be produced in simple or complex patterns thus giving a very striking visual effect. While such an effect is not impossible to reproduce, again it is extremely difficult and requires very expensive equipment and technical expertise indeed and it is envisaged that such material, which can be produced inexpensively in quantity could be used to package such things as cassette recordings. Any recording not bearing such a package or seal would be instantly obvious, and recording "pirates" would simply not have the resources to duplicate the packaging material.
Alternatively any package could have a diffraction grating as a seal which when broken or abused would indicate the contents were suspect, for examplea seal over a spirit or wine bottle where forging expensive vintage chateaux bottled wines is commonplace. Because of the multi-colour diffraction such packaging could also have an attractive 'pointof-sale' appeal whilst also guarding originality.
When the holographic image produced is in the form of a photograph, this can be used in place of the ordinary photograph employed in many documents, for example passports and identity cards, thus providing extremely good protection against forgery. For bank-notes or other securities, a photograph of the monarch could be employed which would provide virtually absolute security since the monarch would obviously not sit for a second holographic photograph for a potential forger. Alternatively, a complex diffraction grating could be embodied.Similarly a diffraction grating covering all or a section of the vital parts of a bank, credit or security card, ticket or car number plate, for example, the embossed customer's name and/or card or serial number, would discourage any alteration or substitution on a lost or stolen card or number plate as any alteration or substitutions would be noticed.
1. A method of identifying an article which comprises producing a holographic image on a sheet or film, and embodying the sheet or film with the image into the article or its packaging.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which the sheet or film is embodied into the article.
3. A method as claimed in either of claims 1 or claim 2 in which the article is a licence, passport, bank-note or the like.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3 in which the image is a holographic image of the holder of the article or of the monarch.
5. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which the image is embodied into the packaging of the article.
6. A method as claimed in claim 5 in which the image is of closely spaced lines to as to produce a defraction grating.
7. A method as claimed in claim 6 in which the article is a commercial product which it is desired to protect from forgery or other unauthorised duplication.
8. A method of identifying an article substantially as hereinbefore particularly described.
