Description
PATENT SPECIFICATION
A WALL CLADDING MEMBER
This invention relates to a wall cladding member.
In particular the invention relates to a wall cladding member primarily intended to have a decorative function but which can also have a protective and insulating function.
Cladding panels for buildings are well known. Usually such cladding panels or elements are attached to the building structure whether that structure be a framework or a completed brick or stone wall by means of an intermediate structure which is first attached to the frame of the building or the wall of the building and then the cladding panels are attached to that intermediate structure.
Alternatively cladding panels, for example, in the form of imitation stone are attached to existing walls by some form of adhesive to give the building a decorative effect.
In the former case a gap is left between the cladding panel and the framework or wall whilst in the latter case there is no space left between the cladding panel and the wall.
The present invention seeks to provide a cladding member for a building in which the cladding panel can be attached directly to the framework or wall whilst leaving a ventilation space between the cladding member and the wall.
Accordingly the present invention provides a decorative wall cladding member having inner and outer surfaces, the outer surface comprising a decorative protective surface, locating means along at least one edge of the member arranged to engage with the corresponding edge of an adjacent cladding member, spacing means on the inner surface of a cladding member arranged to contact a wall structure and the cladding member being attachable directly to a wall structure by fixing means.
The spacing means can comprise at least one leg extending from the inner surface of a cladding member and terminating in a foot.
Preferably the leg and foot is located centrally of the cladding member.
In an alternative arrangement the cladding member can be provided with a plurality of legs terminating in feet, all extending from the inner surface of the cladding member.
The legs and feet can be spaced apart so that there is at Least one leg and associated foot at each corner of a cladding member.
Fixing means can extend through the centrally located leg and foot or through each one of the legs.
The fixing means can comprise a masonry bolt or pin.
The locating means can be providing along at least two edges of the cladding member and the locating means can comprise a tongue or a groove.
In one form of cladding member, according to the present invention, the locating means comprises a groove along two of the edges of a cladding member and a tongue along the remaining two and opposite edges of a cladding member.
The cladding member can be provided with at least one ventilation opening connecting the space behind the cladding member with atmosphere.
The cladding member can be made from a number of suitable materials, for example baked brick, ceramic, plastic or concrete.
Also the exterior surface of the cladding member can be provided with a textured surface for example, to simulate brick or pebbledash. Each cladding member can be rectangular in form or be of any suitable polygonal shape, for example hexagonal.
According to a further feature of the present invention there is provided a wall cladding comprising a plurarity of cladding members according to the invention including edge members arranged to engage with the outer edges of a cladding member comprising the wall cladding, each of the edge members being securable to a wall.
Each edge member can include a spacing means and fixing means.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which
Figure 1 shows a section through a wall cladding member according to the present invention secured to a wall
Figure 2 shows a rear elevation of the wall cladding member shown in
Figure 1,
Figure 3 shows a section through an edge member for use with the wall cladding member shown in Figures 1 and 2, and
Figure 4 shows an alternative form of wall cladding member to that shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawing a wall cladding member 10 which is rectangular in form, has an outer surface lOA and an inner surface lOB.
The cladding member 10 is provided with spacing means 12 which is centrally located and extends from the inner surface 10B. The spacing means 12 comprises a leg 12A and a foot 12B which contacts the outer surface of a wall 14.
The cladding member 10 is provided adjacent each corner with an aperture 16 through which masonry pins 18 are passed enabling the panel to be attached to the wall 14.
The cladding member 10 is provided along at least one edge with a locating means either in the form of a tongue or a groove arranged to locate with a corresponding tongue or groove in an adjacent cladding member.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 1 and 2 the cladding member 10 is provided along two edges with grooves 20 and 22 and the opposite edges are provided with tongues 24 and 26.
In aa arrangement not shown the wall cladding members 24 can be rearranged so that either the tongue 24 or the tongue 26 is on the upwardly facing side of the cladding member in order to prevent the penetration and collection of water between adjacent cladding members.
The cladding member 10 can be provided with one or more ventilation holes 28 to ensure an absence of condensation in the space 30 between the cladding member and the wall.
It will be appreciated that a complete wall cladding can be provided by the use of a number of wall cladding members as shown in Figure 1 and 2 and that each cladding member is attached to a wall by means of pins 18 or any such similar fixing devices. The tongues and grooves of adjacent cladding members will co-operate with one another to provide a neat and consistent appearance to the wall cladding.
A wall cladding comprising a number of cladding members 10 can be completed by the use of edge members 32 shown in Figure 3. Each edge member 32 can be provided in the form of an extruded length which can be cut to the required length and attached to the wall 14 by means of pins 34 at a point above the damp proof course 36 of the wall 14.
In the example shown the edging strip 32 is provided with a groove in order to engage with a tongue on the adjacent wall cladding members 10.
In an alternative arrangement the edging strip 32 can be provided with a tongue to engage with a corresponding groove in each of the wall cladding members 10.
Referring to Figure 4 which shows an alternative form of wall cladding member 38, the cladding member 38 is provided with similar grooves 38 and 40 and tongues 42 and 44 to the cladding members shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The cladding member 38 is attached to the wall 14 by means of a pin or similar fixing device passing through an opening 48 in the fixing means 12.
In this arrangement it will be appreciated that the wall cladding member 38 will be somewhat simpler to attach to a wall whilst a wall cladding comprising a number of cladding members 38 will retain stability because adjacent cladding members will engage one another in exactly the same way as the cladding members 10 shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Cladding members according to the present invention can be provided having appropriate fixing and spacing means but which can be cut to size so as to co-operate with other cladding members according to the present invention and to fill in the spaces between cladding members having a generally rectangular form and any openings such as doors and windows in a wall.
Cladding members according to the present invention can be made from any suitable material for example baked brick, ceramic, plastic or concrete.
Also the exterior surface 10A can be textured in any visually attractive manner. Also the building panels can be of any suitable colour or combination of colours.
Further each cladding member need not be rectangular in form and can be of any suitable polygonal form for example hexagonal which can co-operate with similarly formed cladding members to provide a complete wall cladding.
