Abstract

A lifeguard rescue system comprises of a torpedo-shaped buoy of closed cell foam, a personal throw bag, and a towing strap 3 with a karabina and quick release fastening means. The system is fully integrated, the towing strap can be fitted to either the torpedo buoy or to the throw bag to increase the reaching distance. Each of the three main items can be used as a rescue aid in its own right;- A buoyant aid, a non buoyant aid, a throw line. The system is designed to secure to any fixed object, eg. A lifeguards high chair or the sponsons of a rescue boat. In all cases a very quick release is used. The patrolling lifeguard can shoulder the system or wear it as a belt, leaving the hands free. Once again, it releases very quickly in the event of a rescue. The colour scheme is rod and yellow in keeping with the new directives for lifeguards. <IMAGE>

Description

LIFEGUARD RESCUE SYSTEM : DESCRIPTION The torpedo buoy is made of closed cell foam (13), through it's centre runs a length of 25mm nylon webbing (8). At one end the webbing has a 25mm female quick release clip (6). At the other, two female quick release clips (7) and a stainless steel ring (5). The foam is fitted with a nylon sleeve (14), the webbing tape, passes through two slits at either end.
The torpedo buoy has a detachable towing/reaching strop (3).
Fitted at one end with a karabina and a loop at the other, which can be undone for quick release or to extend the reach. This strop can be attached to the throw line to increase the length of the line in one, snap lock action.
The personal throw bag (2), contains a length of floating rope (9) which is soft and flexible to the touch. At the end of the throw bag is fixed a small piece of closed cell foam (13), to keep the empty bag afloat. There is a draw cord at one end (12), to close the bag and a loop of rope (for grabbing) extending from the other end. On the outside of the bag a short length of webbing is stitched and fitted with two quick release clips (6,7 & ). This enables the bag to be attached to a belt, chair, boat or used as a handle.
The two retaining straps (10) (One with a male clip and the other with a female clip) are used for attaching the Lifeguard Rescue System to just about any location.
The whole system is red and yellow, in keeping with the Lifeguard uniform colours and is marked "LIFEGUARD" in yellow waterproof ink. The system is also available without the "LIFEGUARD" markings for general use.
As with all lifeguard equipment familiarisation and practice is required in it's use the kit comes complete with user friendly instructions.

Claims (5)

CLAIMS.
1 The Lifeguard Rescue System consists of three detachable parts;- namely a, Torpedo Buoy, (Closed cell, flexible foam, covered with a strong outer cover). b, Tow Strap, with karabina and quick release harness. c, Personal Throw Bag, containing floating rope, the outer part of the bag, fitted with quick release strap which attaches to the Torpedo Buoy or onto it's self as a belt loop etc.
2 The Torpedo Buoy as in claim 1 is able to be used as a rescue flotation aid;- In the straight position as a reaching aid. In it's bent attached position as a throwing aid. Bent around a person as a personal buoyancy system.
3 The Towing Strap as in claim 1 can be used when attached to the Torpedo Buoy as claimed in claim 1 and 2. As an extension of the Torpedo Buoy and the Personal Throw Bag as in claim 1. Alternatively it can be used on it's own as a reaching aid.
4 The Personal Throw Bag as in claim 1 and 3 can be used as a safe, easy to throw, bag enabling a longer reaching rescue. It can also be attached to the Towing Strap as in claim 1, 2 and 3. to lengthen the reach even further. The Lifeguard Rescue System as in claim 1 can be used to attain the longest possible reach without endangering the rescuer.
5 The Lifeguard Rescue System as in claim 1 can be fully detached and provide three separate aids to assist in a rescue or multiple rescues.
