Composite photographs; contact printing- frames; bordering masks and apparatus.-A sensitive plate or film is exposed under a blackedout or masked positive of a pictorial setting corresponding to the desired background, and the latent image so produced is masked so as to exhibit only the unexposed part of the surface. The plate or film is then exposed in a camera to the principal subject, and developed. Printing- frames and dark slides employed in the process are provided with means for registering the plate or film and masking devices. In an example described, a background positive transparency is produced by photographing a sitter against the background and blocking out the part occupied by the sitter. From this a series of prints is made upon plates or films, to each of which is attached, as by gummed strips, a mask covering the exposed background portion. These plates or films are then exposed in a camera to any desired sitter and after removing the mask are developed and printed. The focusing-screen of the camera may be provided with a mask similar to that covering the partly-exposed plate or film. In a modification, a separate mask formed of a glass plate is employed, and is inserted, in register with each partly-exposed plate or film, in a dark slide having locating stops w, Fig. 10, and a retaining spring-clip x. In printing the back, ground, the plate or film is registered with the background positives in a printing-frame having screws actuating plates k to force the elements against the edges i of the frame, and spring-clips may be provided on the edges i to secure the registered elements. A modified frame is described for registering the partly-exposed plate with the mask having locating stops on the registering edges i and a spring retaining clip at one of the other edges.
