Abstract

A portable outdoor cooking unit comprises two tripods (2) supporting a crossbar (1) from which may be simultaneously suspended adjustable subunits (A-D) with attachments enabling a wide variety of cooking methods. The cooking unit has been designed primarily for outdoor use with an open fire for camping and the like. The cooking unit is easily dismantled for packing and lifting for transport. The subunits may comprise a grill/hob (A), a spit (B), a ratchet pot hanger (C) and a swing arm hanger (D).

Description

COMPREHENSIVE PORTABLE OUTDOOR COOING UNIT This invention relates to a comprehensive portable outdoor cooking unit.

Existing units for outdoor cooking, when portable are limited in scope for different forms of cooking.

According to the present invention there is provided a comprehensive and portable cooking unit for use with open fire. This comprises two tripods and a crossbar from which may be simultaneously suspended four subunits: grill/hob with griddle kebab-rack oven toaster, spit, means for using pots and kettles, all of which may be dismantled to pack into two conveniently portable boxes.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Drawing 1/9 shows in perspective, the General Arrangement of the erected unit.

Drawing 2/9 illustrates the operation mode and travels of grill/hob.

Drawing 3/9 illustrates attachment and operation mode of kebab-rack.

Drawing 4/9 illustrates attachment and operation mode of griddle.

Referring to drawing 1/9 the cooking unit comprises a crossbar 1 supported by two tripods 2 and from the crossbar 1 simultaneously suspended the four subunits * : grill/hob A, spit B, ratchet pot hanger C, swing arm hanger D.

* For numerical clarity, the four subunits are identified by letters.

Referring to drawing 2/9 the grill/hob A comprises stainless steel grill platform 3 resting on 'H' frame 4 which is connected to travel mechanisms, vertical 5 and horizontal not shown. The grill/hob A can be moved mechanically to suit fire conditions and heat requirements, horizontally along the crossbar 1, for example by means of worm drive, and horizontal turning handle 6 not shown here (see drawing 1/9) and vertically, for example with rack and pinion, by means of vertical turning handle 7 not shown here (see drawing 1/9). The grill/hob A may be used for: grilling, boiling, simmering, frying, warming.

Referring to drawing 3/9 the kebab-rack comprises two notched stainless steel angles 8 with locating pins 9 to grill/hob platform 3. Loaded kebab swords 10 lay across notched angles 8.

Referring to drawing 4/9 the griddle comprises a stainless steel plate 11 with locating pins 9 to grill/hob platform 3. The griddle may used for griddling or as a hot plate.

Referring to drawing 5/9 the oven comprises: a double skinned insulated stainless steel box 12, two removable stainless steel shelves not shown, a hinged door 13 and incorporates griddle plate 11 as its base. Oven attaches with locating pins 9 to griddle plate 11 and thence to grill/hob platform 3.

The oven may be used for baking, oven-roasting, casseroling, braising, warming.

Referring to drawing 6/9 the toaster comprises a stainless steel cage 14 attached to grill/hob platform 3 for example as shown.

Referring to drawing 7/9 the spit B comprises detachable stainless steel broach 15 with spike clamps 16 and is rotated by broach turning handle 17 and supported by 'H' frame 18 which is connected to travel mechanisms, vertical 19 and horizontal not shown. The spit B can be moved mechanically to suit fire conditions and heat requirements, horizontally along the crossbar 1, for example by means of worm drive, and horizontal turning handle 20 not shown here (see drawing 1/9) and vertically, for example with rack and pinion, by means of vertical turning handle 21 not shown here (see drawing The The broach rotation is controlled by brake mechanism 22 to enable unbalanced loads to be left unattended.

Referring to drawing 8/9 the ratchet pot hanger C comprises a vertical flat bar 23 and adjustable ratchet 24 with pot hook 25, suspended from crossbar 1 secured with locking pin 26. The pot hanger C can be moved to suit fire conditions and heat requirements, horizontally by releasing pin 26 and sliding along crossbar 1, vertically by means of ratchet 24. The ratchet pot hanger C may be used to boil, stew, simmer, and accommodates very heavy pots or cauldrons.

Referring to drawing 9/9 the swing arm hanger D comprises a vertical rod 27 suspended from crossbar 1, locking device 28, notched swing arm 29. Swing arm 29 allows utensils to be swung away from fire and kettles poured without removal by means of kettle tilt 30. The swing arm hanger D can be moved to suit fire conditions and heat requirements, horizontally by releasing locking device 28 and sliding along the crossbar 1, vertically by sliding swing arm 29 on rod 27 and securing with pin 31.

All parts are dismantled and packed into two portable boxes.

Claims (9)

1. A versatile portable cooking device comprising two uprights supporting a crossbar from which may be simultaneously suspended subunits with attachments which allow a variety of cooking methods.

2. A method of cooking wherein you use a device as claimed in Claim 1.

3. A cooking device as claimed in Claim 1 where an 'H' frame subunit with horizontal and vertical travel mechanisms supports a grill with hob/griddle plate, oven, toaster, and kebab rack.

4. A cooking device as claimed in Claim 1 where a subunit with horizontal and vertical travel mechanisms comprises a rotating spit with brake mechanism.

5. A cooking device as claimed in Claim 1 where a subunit with horizontal travel and vertical travel by means of a ratchet enables heavy pots to be manoevred.

6. A cooking device as claimed in Claim 1 where a subunit with horizontal travel supports an arm with vertical travel and horizontal swing and kettle tilt.

7. A cooking device as claimed in Claim 1 where all parts may be dismantled for packing and transport.

8. A cooking device as claimed in any preceding claim which is made from metal, plastics material or wood, or from a combination of these materials.

9. A cooking device substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
