Abstract
A weighing device, for use in a supermarket checkout, has an electronic article surveillance (EAS) tag deactivator 34 in or adjacent to a flat bed load receptor 32 which is built into the cashdesk. The load receptor, which may be either a conveyor belt (fig.3) or static, acts with a load detector 33 to provide a weighing signal. The load detector may comprise a load cell whilst the deactivator may be in the form of a permanent magnet, an r.f. device or a magnetic coil.
Description
WEIGHING DEVICE
The present invention relates to a weighing device suitable for but not restricted to use in a check out counter.
Check out counters such as are used in supermarkets are known to have weighing machines in the check out handling surface that is the surface over which goods to be purchased are passed or conveyed.
Recent developments in electronic article surveillance
(EAS) suggest increasing use of EAS tagging in packaging and products. Current deactivation of the tags is carried out by deactivating devices using permanent magnets, coils or an RF signal. Such devices depending on the type of tagging used will be referred to below generally as "deactivators". These deactivators are normally fitted to one side of the check out handling surface where they may be awkward for the check out operative to access.
According to the present invention there is provided a weighing device comprising a flat bed load receptor, a deactivator as defined above mounted in, or adjacent the load receptor and a load detector arranged to act with the receptor to provide a weighing signal.
The advantage of effectively incorporating the deactivator in the device is to save space which is at a premium in a check out area.
The load receptor may be static in the sense of being part of a fixed scale or may be part of a conveyor scale. In the latter case the deactivator is mounted below the load receptor.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a weighing device according to a first embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a weighing device according to a second embodiment of the invention,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a weighing device according to a third embodiment of the invention, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a weighing device according to a fourth embodiment of the invention.
In Figure 1 a scanner scale 1 is provided as a weighing device with a load receptor 2 with load detectors 3 and deactivators 4 mounted below the load receptor. The deactivators are suitably permanent magnets but may be RF devices.
In Figure 2 a low profile scale 11 is provided as a weighing device with a load receptor 12 with a load detector 13 and a deactivator 14 provided as a coil on top of the load receptor.
In Figure 3 a conveyor type scale 21 is provided as a weighing device with a conveyor 22 which acts as a load receptor, a load detector 23 and a deactivator 24 below the load receptor.
In Figure 4 a check out scale 31 being a weighing device has a load receptor 32 below which is a load detector 33 and deactivator 34 which is below the receptor 32 but just above the load detector.
The load detectors 3, 13, 23 and 33 are load cells.
The deactivators 4, 14, 24 and 34 are suitably permanent or coil magnets or RF deactivators, the latter of which act so as to "destroy" the EAS tagging device. The deactivators are shown mounted below or above the load receptors but may be incorporated within the load receptor. Alternatively the deactivators could be mounted to the scales immediately to one side of the receptor.
Claims (6)
1. A weighing device comprising a flat bed load receptor, a deactivator as hereinbefore defined mounted in, or adjacent the load receptor and a load detector arranged to act with the receptor to provide a weighing signal.
2. A weighing device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the load receptor is static.
3. A weighing device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the load receptor is in the form of a conveyor.
4. A weighing device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the deactivator comprises at least one permanent magnet, a coil arranged to produce a magnetic field or an
R.F. device.
5. A weighing device as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the load detector is a load cell.
6. A weighing device substantially as described with reference to Figure 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the accompanying drawings.
