Wire resistances, cored.- In a muffle furnace a wound externally with a nickelchrome heating wire b, the latter is held out of contact without support for substantially its whole length with material containing silica. The wire is supported in grooves in fireclay or like strips c which are integral with or separate from the furnace according to whether the latter is made of fireclay or metal.
