Abstract
237,651. Olsen Engine Syndicate, Ltd., and Olsen, S. D. April 30, 1924. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-Liquid fuel, mixed with air abstracted during the compression stroke from the cylinder, is injected into the combustion chamber by a spring-actuated plunger c, Fig. 1, which is retracted by a cam and which surround a valve member d actuated by a separate cam. Fuel is supplied to the space below the piston d through a passage k while the valve d is closed, and on the opening of the valve the fuel is mixed with air entering from the working cylinder through a tangentially disposed orifice i. The valve d is never lifted sufficiently to remove the lower end of the stem from a cylindrical orifice h. At the commencement of injection the valve d closes slightly. in order to bring an atomizing device f carried by the valve into position in the passage h<1>, so that the fuel and air entering the combustion chamber are compelled to pass through a restricted passage surrounding the atomizer f, the conical upper surface of which scatters the charge in the combustion chamber. In an alternative construction, shown in Fig. 8, fuel is supplied to the upper face of the piston c, and is delivered to the lower end of the injector cylinder on the raising of the piston c through a by-pass i. The valve member e<1> and atomizing device f<1> are carried by the piston c, which is an easy fit in its cylinder, and is provided with a spring-pressed member l which tightly seals the fuel inlet orifice k<1> when the piston is raised. The upper end of the piston may be inclined so that by turning it the degree of clearance at the orifice k<1> may be exactly adjusted. A needle valve may be provided into the oil supply pipe k, the fuel being sucked into the space above the piston c on the downstroke of the piston. According to one of the Provisional Specifications, the atomizer may consist of two annular projections on a stem such as f<1>. These projections fit in the fuel injection passage and are provided with staggered longitudinal grooves through which the charge passes to the combustion chamber; below them a conical member such as f may be provided. A passage such as i, Fig. 1, may open into the seating of the valve d.
