Abstract
248,063. British Tabulating Machine Co., Ltd., and Baillie, G. H. Nov. 25, 1924. Checking and recording receipts; voucher-issuing; with item-printing mechanism.- A machine for recording transactions as in stores produces three separate records of each transaction, (1) by perforating a record-sheet, or card, (2) by printing upon a record roll retained in the machine, and (3) by printing upon a voucher-strip, there being a single manual actuating-means common to the punching and printing mechanisms. Preferably the two sets of printing types are on opposite sides of common typebars and the machine, is without registers. A frame 22 carrying the printing mechanisms and the type-setting devices is pivoted at 18 to a. fixed base 14 bearing the manual operation shaft 16 which has crank pins 28 co-acting with halfjournals 26 on two spring-held links 24 pivoted to the frame 22, thus raising and lowering the latter as the shaft 16 is oscillated manually Secured to the base 14 is a die-plate 32 surmounted by a stripper plate 34, between which the " Hollerith " card blank is fed bv hand from the left. Vertical rods 38 on the base 14 support slidably a lifter plate 36 carrying the punches 50, this lifter plate being raised and lowered by jawed members 40 secured to spindles 42 rotatably carried on the frame 22. Type-bars 54 are supported on the underside of the frame 22 by a transverse bar 56 and leaf springs 58, each type bar being extended above and parallel to one of the nineteen columns of punches and carrying a projection 60 which is set to engage and depress that punch of the column corresponding to the numeral on that type-bar at the printing line. Each type-bar carries a lower set of type 64 printing upon a record roll 66 retained in the machine and an upper set 62 printing upon a voucherstrip 74, Fig. 1, the roll 66 and strip 74 moving transversely of, and along, the printing line respectively. After printing and feeding, the voucher is cut off by two co-acting knives, one carried by the frame 22 and the other by the base 14, and delivered to a tray. To remove the punches for sharpening, the links 24 are moved by hand away from the crank pins 28, arms 90 are moved forwardly. the jawed members 40 are rotated by fingers 40 rigid therewith away from the lifter plate 36, and a cord 132, referred to below, is detached from an arm 136, whereupon the frame 22 may be fully raised. For type-setting, twelve guide-rods 148, Figs. 1 - - 3, carry two-part sliders 154, 155, of which 154 has a setting finger 156 and a wedge 158 normally engaged a notched bar 150, and 155 has a metal strip 157 passing through a slot in the appropriate type-bare, the numerals 160 of which appear in windows 164, Fig. 2. To set a type-bar its finger 156 is moved to the left, Fig. 3, and then to the right, Fig. 1. An arrangement is described so that, by connecting one type bar to two columns of punches, the items may be printed in pounds. shillings, and pence and perforated according to the decimal system. Line-spacing mechanism; letter-spacing mechanism. The record-roller 66 is fed from a roller 70 past the lower platen 68 and between rollers 116, 118 by means of a ratchet 120 secured to the roller 118 and co-acting with a pawl 122, Fig. 1. pivoted to a spring-raised arm 124 which is depressed each time the frame 22 is lowered, whereby the pawl 122 takes over another tooth of the ratchet. The voucher strip 74 is fed from a roller 76 by rollers 78. 80, Figs. 3 and 5. and beneath platens 82. Two dummy platens at the ends carry a strip-supporting plate 84, Fig. 1, having a lateral slot from end to end of the printing line to allow rubber platen-blocks 86 to press the paper upon the type. The lower feed roller 78 is loose on a shaft 128, Fig. 5, rotated by a spiral spring and connected to the roller by a ratchet and pawl. A drum 130 rigid on the shaft 128 has attached to it a cord 132, of which the other end is secured to an arm 136 attached to the shaft 16. When the latter shaft is rocked manually the cord winds in and releases the spiral spring feeding the roller 78 and strip 74. Hammer impression arrangements. A bail 88 just above, the platens 82 has depending arms 90 with shoulders 92 which are engaged by projec tions 94 on the crank 16 as the crank pins 28 are passing through their lower dead centres, whereby the bail 88 forces the platens 86 down to print from the upper type 62, and further movement or bail 88 forces the type bars 54 down against the springs 58 to effect printing from the lower type 64.
