Abstract

Gases, treating with liquids. - Apparatus for treating liquids with gases by direct contact, for example for cooling by air the jacketwater of internalcombustion engines, or for heating or purifying air, comprises a casing h containing a vertical cell having walls e of expanded metal and packed with metal rings or shavings or like material, the liquid being distributed over the packing from a trough b at the top and the air, entering at m, being forced by a fan j through the cell a plurality of times in reversed directions perpendicularly to the liquid, as indicated by the arrows. The liquid is collected at the bottom and led or pumped away, for example, by a pipe g. The walls e are fitted with series of spaced baffles p inclined so as to assist in diverting the air and so as to intercept and return to the cell any liquid entrained by the air, which finally leaves the casing by the opening n.
