Density separators; discharging; treating substances with liquids.- Solid particles are separated from liquids in a centrifugal apparatus and the solid particles are then treated by a liquid passed radially through the collected mass and centrifugally discharged. An imperforate bowl 10 mounted on a shaft 11 has an internal perforate screen 14 separated from it by a spacing member of woven wire or fabric, which permits a free flow of liquid between the screen and the bowl. A disc 16 extends radially inward from the screen 14 and, with the end of the bowl, forms a chamber 18 in communication with the space 'between the screen and the bowl. A chamber 19 is formed at the other end of the bowl by a disc 17. The liquids and solids for separation are supplied through the pipe 23 to the annular and partly conical channel 24, and thence to the main separating chamber 26. The solids form a cake upon the screen 10 and the liquid forms a hollow cylinder in the bowl. The liquid may be removed by a skimming pipe 27 in the main chamber 26, or by a skimmer 28 in the compartment 18. The position of the skimmers may be adjusted radially by means of screw and nut mechanism so that they may collect liquids at different distances from the axis; the skimmer 28 may be moved so far outwards that it passes beyond the cake of solids. A system of pipes and valves enables liquids withdrawn from the main compartment 26 to be supplied to either of the compartments 18, 19 in order to pass radially inwards through the cake of solids. Other liquids for washing or treating the solids may be supplied through the pipes 47, 44. Liquids discharged centrifugally over the weir edge 60<a> of the bowl are collected in the casing 50 and passed by the pump 51 to storage. A discharging tool 54 for the solids has a screw adjustment under the control of the handle 70 to enable the solids to be dislodged from the bowl to drop into the hopper 55. In a modification, the liquid from the main compartment is discharged over a weir into an auxiliary chamber from which it is discharged centrifugally through radial channels. In another modification, the screen 14 is discarded and an annular perforate partition divides the bowl 10 into chambers 18<1>, 26<1>, Fig. 4. The partition consists of a perforate screen 65<a> spaced from a plate 64a having large perforations by a woven-wire screen. Adjustable skimmers 27, 28 are provided in the chambers 26<1>, 18<1> respectively. Washing liquid may be introduced through the supply passage 24 and withdrawn by the skimmer 28.
