Abstract

Producers. - Producer gas is generated by subjecting powdered carbonaceous material to a mixture of air and steam the temperature of which is automatically controlled and heated to above the reaction temperature, for example to 2000‹ F. Coal from a hopper 1 after passage through a pulverizer 4 and conveyer 7 is delivered to an annular passage 10 at the top of a chamber 16. Superheated steam and air are also supplied to the passage 10, from which are nozzles directed tangentially into the chamber 16 whence the gases are withdrawn through pipe 17 leading to a heat exchanger 15, dust separator 42 and gas holder 44, a slag or residue outlet pipe 39 being provided to the producer chamber. The air and steam superheater 21 is heated by a burner 21<b>, the hot gases from which pass by a pipe 23 to a heat exchanger 24 in which the air is superheated before passing by pipe 26d, pump 27, pipe 34, heat exchanger 15, and pipe 18 to the heating coil 19. Steam is supplied by the exhaust of a pump 12 and passes by pipe 14 to heat exchanger 15 to mix with the air for use in the process. The burner 21b is controlled automatically by a pyrometer operating a valve 48a in the fuel pipe 48b.
