Abstract

332,366. Philipon, H. J. F. June 15, 1929. Producers.-In an ash-melting producer, the proportion of fixed carbon to the weight of the charge is about 30 per cent, the slag being formed by high ash content fuels or by additions of substances having a base of silica, alumina or lime, a fusible slag being obtained having an SiO2/CaO ratio of 0.9. Variations of the composition of the charge may be accommodated by varying the blast temperature between 400‹ and 800‹ C. Low grade cast iron may be added and transformed into silicious cast iron free from sulphur. Iron ores may be added, either mixed with the fuel, or formed into briquettes, the proportion of iron being always 50 per cent lower than that in a blast furnace and less than 15 per cent of the total charge. Towns refuse may be employed. High ash fuels may have limestone or lime added to produce a cement slag. Phosphate of lime may be used and steam added to give phosphoric acid and hydrogen, and if ammonia is introduced a yield of ammonium phosphate is obtained. Ores containing zinc lead, tin, potash, or soda may be employed, and the oxides of the volatile metals collected, and when sulphide ores are employed the sulphur is retained by the iron in the charge. Copper or precious metals if present will be collected as a. matter at the base of the producer. Specifications 194,648 and 196,599 are referred to.
