Abstract

337,589. Aitchison, J. H., Bull, H., and Johnson, L. Oct. 25, 1929. Uniting by fusion.-An are-electrode or welding rod for welding alloys comprises a billet &c. composed of one or more metals of the alloy to be welded and provided with one or more longitudinal cores or coverings of the other metal or metals of the alloy, the composite billet being worked into a composite electrode by rolling, forging or drawing. One hole of the billet may contain two or more of the other metals of the alloy disposed concentrically therein and the hole or the exterior of the billet or the core may be coated with one or more of the metals by electrodeposition. The core may be composite when the alloy contains a great number of metals, e.g. a sleeve or liner containing elements such as tungsten, manganese, vanadium, silicon &c. may be interposed between a nickel core and a chromium steel billet, or the additional metals may be in the form of powder. One or more of the alloying metals may be inserted in a hole in the billet by casting or a central core may be secured in place by casting one or more metals in the annular space between the core and billet. In a modification the composite billet is formed from a central core by adding the other materials to its exterior by electrodeposition. spraying, wrapping or casting. In an example, an electrode for welding stainless steel containing 15 per cent chromium and 11 per cent nickel is made from a billet of chromium steel containing 20 per cent chromium and 0.1 per cent carbon, a hole in the billet being filed by a nickel core secured by welding or riveting. The diameters of the hole and rod are so chosen that the nickel represents approximately 10 per cent of the weight of the composite billet which is then heated and rolled to form a rod. The rod is next annealed if necessary and then cold drawn to the required size of the electrode which, in use, melts to form a welding joint containing 0.09 per cent carbon, 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel.
