Abstract
373,592. Disc brakes. GASS, E., 28, Rue Villeneuve, Clichy, France. Nov. 20, 1930, No. 35041. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 103 (i).] A disc brake for vehicle wheels comprises a flexible disc 8 secured to the wheel 16 and arranged between two fixed plates 10, 4. The plate 10 is fixed on the vehicle axle by a support 12 on which the disc 4 is mounted by a flexible part 103. The support 12 carries a series of hydraulic cylinders around its periphery the pistons 87 of which are adapted to press the plates 4, 8 against the plate 10. The cylinders are mutually connected by conduits 82 and are supplied through the inlet by a main pipe 90. The brake is operated by a high-pressure piston 38, Fig. 4, depressed by a foot-pedal 35. When wear in the brake occurs the piston 54 is released to the extent required to compensate for the wear by means of the screw 59 which allows the sheave 53 attached to the low-pressure piston 54 to engage a slope 52 on the piston 38. When the brake is applied the slope 52 operates the piston 54 and drives fluid through pipe 44 to the brake conduit until the sheave reaches the top of the slope 52 when the application is continued by the highpressure piston 38. Fluid is supplied from tank 58 through a port 51. In a modified form when wear has occurred the piston 37, Fig. 6, is rotated by loosening the guide-pin 47 to close a port 50 by means of a slope 39 by the amount required to compensate for wear. On brake application the fluid which cylinder 46 contains as it is prevented from returning to the tank 58 through the port 50 is drawn by the piston 37 through valve 45 to the highpressure cylinder 40 until the port 50 is uncovered, when the piston 38 continues moving to produce the high pressure. A safety device to prevent leakage in case of a pipe breaking, comprises a piston 91, Fig. 13, having ports 98, 99 supplying conduits 100, 101. If one pipe breaks the pressure falls therein and the piston moves so as to close this pipe from the supply pipe 95. To prevent excessive braking on a lightly-loaded vehicle a device, Fig. 10, is used in which the pressure of a spring 63 may be released thus allowing a piston 61 to close the supply through the port 65 at a certain pressure.
