Abstract

378,868. Valve amplifying circuits ; code telegraphy. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc., 195, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Burton, E. T. ; 97, Cypress Street. Millburn, New Jersey, U.S.A.) May 16, 1931, No. 14549. Convention date, May 21, 1930. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v).] The invention relates to gas-filled tube relays in which the magnitude of the output is independent of the magnitude of the input and an uncontrolled glow or arc persists until quenched or interrupted by some other agency than variation of the potential of the control electrode. The quenching may be effected by a limiting device in the anode circuit which may comprise a condenser shunted by a resistance or alternatively an alternating voltage operating under the control of the signal &c. input may be applied to the anode circuit to quench or stop the arc. Fig. 1 shows a zero wander correction circuit in which an amplifier 10 is connected to the cable and applies the signals through magnetically biased impulse coils 1C of the type described in Specification 312,338, [Class 40 (iii), Telegraphs, Electric], to a receiving circuit 15. When a secondary impulse in either winding 16 or 17 exceeds the grid bias of glow discharge tube 1 or 2 a glow discharge operates relay 4 directly to correct the zero wander through network 8. Relay 4 and the resistance capacity network 8 are of the type described in Specification 270,354, [Class 40 (iii), Telegraphs, Electric]. Quenching the discharge is effected by resistance-condenser combination 5, 6. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), quenching is effected by a transformer coupling between the anode circuits so arranged that the starting of a discharge in one of the valve circuits quenches the discharge in the other valve of the pair. Alternatively a capacitive coupling between the anodes may be used for the same purpose. Fig. 4 shows a relay arrangement for signal shaping in which the gas-filled tubes 1, 2 deal with positive and negative voltages respectively and are provided with auxiliary gas-filled or thermionic tubes 20, 21 for quenching through transformers 23, 24. Fig. 6 shows a peak voltmeter for determining voltages in excess of a given value utilizing a pair of gas-filled tubes 41, 42 in which the potentiometer 43 determines the voltage at which the discharge occurs. Quenching, is effected by resistance condenser combination 47, 48 and a record is made by a magnetic device 44 of the siphon recorder type. A number of such recorders with different biasing voltages may be used to record different peak voltages. Specifications 297,696, 315,821, and 318,989, [all in Class 40 (iii), Telegraphs, Electric], also are referred to.
