Abstract

Textile materials are sized with aqueous emulsions of drying oil oxidation products (or partly saponified oxidation products) having an iodine number below 75. The emulsions may be prepared from the solid or dissolved oxidation products with the aid of emulsifying agents such as highly sulphonated oils or fatty acids. Alternatively, emulsified drying oils may be treated in known manner with oxygen or air or other oxidizing agent. Fats, waxes, resins, oxidation products of semi-drying oils, and protective colloids may be added to the emulsions; an anti-oxidant, e.g. an amine, a phenol, or a mercapto compound, may also be added, to hinder oxidation and polymerization of the film produced on the textiles. In the examples, (1) a solution of oxidized linseed oil (iodine number 60) and Japan wax in toluene is mixed with an aqueous solution of sulphonated acids from olive oil, as sodium salts; the toluene is evaporated, and the residue is diluted with water and used for sizing acetate silk; (2) a solution of linoxyn and Japan wax in toluene is neutralized with calcium hydroxide and then treated as in example (1).ALSO:Aqueous emulsions of drying oil oxidation products (or partly saponified oxidation products) having an iodine number below 75 are prepared from the solid or dissolved oxidation products with the aid of emulsifying agents such as highly sulphonated oils or fatty acids.
