Abstract
396,463. Four-stroke engines. MARCHANT, W. D., 354, Rue de Herve, Bois de Breux, Liege, Belgium, and STEWART, R. N., Kinlochmoidart, Glenfinnan, Invernessshire. Feb. 16, 1932, No. 4612. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] A pump 3 placed between two power cylinders supplies them alternately with either air or a lightfuel mixture according as the engine is to run with compression or spark ignition. The admission to the pump is controlled by a rotary valve 26 in the head, the delivery being past the inlet valves 24 to the cylinders in a modification, a rotary valve is interposed in each delivery passage 36 between the pump cylinder and valve 24. The rotary valve 26 has an opening 63 at its end which can be blanked off or connected by a flange 62 to a carburetter ; at the top of the head are two air inlets 44 controllable by a rotary plate 46 to regulate the air admission to the pump. The pump piston moves right up to the head and may be provided with a projection to reduce clearance, so that the whole charge is driven out at each delivery stroke. Valve gear.-The rotary valve 26 is driven from a half-time shaft 14 through bevel gear 31, 32, spindle 33 and gear 34, 35 ; a pinion 29 mounted behind the wheel 35 is used to drive the shafts 40 carrying the cams for the poppet valves 24, 25. Combustion chambers.-The faces of the valves 24, 25, piston tops and other cylinder surfaces are all curved. Liquid fuel nozzles are inserted at the side through orifices 61.
