Abstract

Washing-compositions consist of a sulphonated alcohol or an alkali salt thereof, and Bentonite, "Wilkinite," or equivalent clay. There may be added an alkaline substance, e.g. borax, disodium hydrogen or other phosphate, sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, a medicament, e.g. menthol, water, glycerine, an emollient, and colouring or recanting materials. Sodium salts of sulphonated fatty alcohols containing 6 or more carbon atoms are preferred; lauryl, oleyl, and octodecenyl alcohols are specified, and the commercial preparations "Sulphonated Lorol," "Sulphonated Ocenal." Examples include a shampoo prepared by mixing 3 lb. of Bentonite, 1 lb. of sodium salt of sulphonated lauryl alcohol, and 1 lb. of sodium bicarbonate, and dissolving \ba1/2\be oz. of the mixture in 10 oz. of water. The preparations may be moulded into tablets or bars or made into pastes.
